This school bus hung on the inside of my Mom’s walk in closet door for years. When I found it buried in old papers, every single minute of those bad hair years rushed back to me.
I grew up in a very small town in the middle of a huge cornfield in rural Ohio. One of my favorite memories is visiting the library with my Mom. We spent hours looking through books and records. I loved checking out my own books and piling them high into my wagon. Our car was a faded red Plymouth Duster. I kept lists of all the books I read in little notebooks that my Dad would have left over from his job at the Gas Company. For some reason, I hid the notebooks under the mattress of my bunk bed for years. My Mom also kept those and now they sit in my studio as inspiration for my next children's book.
I graduated from the Columbus College of Art & Design, and created award-winning artwork for clients such as American Greetings, Smucker's Jams and Jelly’s and John Carrol University. Now located in Arizona, I am an active member of the Society of Children’s Book Writers & Illustrators, an avid vintage ink collector, and I still loves the smell of a corn field in summer. Thrifting records from garage sales and flea markets make me super happy. I have 3 energetic young boys who love to ride dirt bikes, skateboard, play basketball and explore flea markets together. I can often be found driving one of the boys to a sports practice, with a bag full of markers, sketchbook, latest book I am reading and a huge thermos of fresh brewed sun tea.
